We the People poses a question fundamental to Ward’s career; how the art object can serve as activist in order to challenge societal power structures. Demonstrating Ward’s ongoing concerns with formal aesthetics, this tote bag based on Ward's acclaimed wall piece calls attention to American history as well as issues of race, identity, and politics that remain relevant in this country today. Ward renders the opening words of the US Constitution, using hundreds of shoelaces - suggesting an anonymous mass of people and ideas of mobility - installed directly onto the wall. This work continues Ward’s ongoing examination of discrimination, and belonging. By enlarging this powerful term, Ward asks the viewers to contemplate the meaning and reexamine the legal and emotional implications associated with the rights of a U.S. citizen.
