Ashley Bickerton explores themes of consumerism, consumption, excess, and identity, often challenging boundaries between painting and sculpture in his work. The “Wall-Wall” series comprises “fake” or “allegorical” walls. Bickerton began experimenting with this form in the 1980s when he saw garishly colored walls in Acapulco, Mexico. He wanted to abstract these structures from their real-world contexts, thus constructing a wall upon a wall. With these works, Bickerton is using the “wall” as a kind of ready-made object that can be continually recontextualized as it is installed upon other walls.
