This work is inspired byOn the Origin of Species,a work of scientific literature by Charles Darwin that is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. The artists have appropriated the “Tree of Life,” an original sketch from Darwin’s notebook that visually articulates his theory of evolution. To create this work, Rollins and K.O.S. produced a rubber stamp of the “Tree of Life” motif, which was used to repeatedly by several members to mark the surface. The form is then repeated, each stemming from the one before to create a visually complex abstract form composed of multiple trees of life. For the artists, works from this series represent both diversity and social action as they are created intuitively and collaboratively, with the group deciding together on the final composition and formal arrangement.
