Statement from the artist: "I’ve owned a vintage Ouija Board for a few years now. I used the box as the reference for this painting. It sits in my cabinet of curiosities collecting dust. I’ve never used it and don’t intend to. Am I afraid to? Maybe. It was designed as a form of entertainment, a literal toy, but, unlike Monopoly, the game allegedly doesn’t end when you put it away. The popular phrase, if you watch the paranormal shows flooding our screens, is that ‘you’ve opened a door’ and, get ready for it, ‘you might not like what’s behind it.’ I never found a Ouija board under the tree on Christmas morning, but to my surprise I’ve been told by a few friends that they had. You might think they had goth parents, but that wasn’t the case. I was a bit shocked to hear a potential portal to the spirit world was nestled next to a Barbie or a box of Legos wrapped up in colorful wrapping paper waiting to be torn open with glee. Throw in a deck of Tarot cards while you’re at it. The title of this work is an obvious pun, (I’m fond of those) but I was oblivious to the idea of this being an actual present given to children, and that, to me, makes it extra funny.”
